  1. I've only had 25 today (in my spam folder).

But your spam filter caught them, so in one sense, it's not out of control. Spam filters are now so good that people often think that spam isn't a problem – I've heard a response to that which is "If you think that, you don't run an email server".

    (P.S. I don't run an email server, so I think it's not a problem.)

  2. Jeremy:

    The problem is:

    1. Sometimes legitimate comments get caught in the spam filter. With the current volume of spam, I can't hope to find anything that got lost.

    2. I also get about 25 spam comments a day that don't get caught in the spam filter.

  3. There's also: 3. Internet users pay for the bandwidth taken up by spam, both in dollars to keep upgrading the infrastructure and in slower download times.

  4. I didn't mean to imply it's not out of control. I agree it is, but that people don't realize it's a problem any more.

My spam filter on my gmail account is very good – it's very rare that there's a false positive, and false negatives happen about once a week. My work email is much worse – maybe 5 or 6 a day get through, but I haven't had a false positive for years.

I guess spam comments are trickier to determine – that's a pain.

  5. But, look at the bright side. At least you are getting lots of targeted advertising for spam casserole, spam taco, spamwiches — I know I do when I am peeping around my spam folder.

  6. Teachers have the same problem with spam and students getting their emails in the spam folder on accident. This is why most professors ask their students to put in a specific subject line so that their messages can appear in the inbox or can be easily found by searching those keywords in the spam folder.

Spam is getting really out of control. I looked at one of my old emails from when I was a child, I had spam in the spam folder and my inbox. I figured there was no way I was going to try to start using that email again
