At the time I checked, I only saw 7 comments. I think you should continue to write about push-button issues. In a lot of ways I think that column was a perfect science education column, deceptively simple and very efficient in its value per words.
I would've predicted a smarter readership for SciAm than was reflected by those 7 comments, unless perhaps a mass-market or issue oriented website linked to your blog piece.
The problem is that you linked guns and gay. Think about it. Apt considering you were speaking about the military but gun people are touchy in general and about gays specifically.
