  1. Is 29,853 pounds ($46,500) a normal salary for this type of position? Sounds rather low for such a high-skill/knowledge job.

  2. I dunno. They do have free health care in England, so $46,500 goes further there than it would in the U.S. Most people get by on less.

Also, my impression is that academic jobs pay less than comparable jobs in industry or government. In academia, you typically have a lot of flexibility in working hours and also some time to work on your own projects.

  3. I am currently studying ARM and BDA; Without going through a lengthy PhD process, I would like to certify my (future) knowledge in some way, and be able to apply for these jobs. I wish this was possible. Probably not.

  4. Just to clarify:

Appointment at Research *Assistant* level (starting at £29,853) requires a postgrad qualification in statistics or a quantitative social science, but that could be a one-year masters, i.e. only 4 years of university-level education in total as UK bachelors degrees are nearly all 3 years. If you don't have one you'd be expected to register for one. If you already have a doctorate *and* two or three years' postdoc experience you'd expect to get appointed at Research *Associate* level (starting at £33,600).

For comparison, median pay in the UK in 2009 was £21,320, mean £26,470, 70th percentile 29,835, 80th percentile £35,733 (source: UK Office of National Statistics Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings)

  5. UK is a bit different in many ways (which might be changing)

In 2001-2003 my Research Fellow salary was £27,000

but I had no degree in statsitics (rather an MBA)

was able to register and undertake a Phd in Statistics (and still draw the salary)

obtained a falculty appointment in a College (free meals at high table) where an number of senior falculty had never obtained a Phd

ran up a fair size debt over the two years (partly due to tuition and extra travel costs)

still hard for me to believe individuals can comfortably live on £29,853 a year …

but if you can make the sacrifice these look like really interesting opportunities and Bristol is a very nice place!

    K?
