A very short story

A few years ago we went to a nearby fried chicken place that the Village Voice had raved about. While we were waiting to place our order, someone from the local Chinese takeout place came in with a delivery, which the employees of the chicken place proceeded to eat. This should’ve been our signal to leave. Instead, we bought some chicken. It was terrible.

  1. It's as if you picked door number 1, and Monty Hall accidentally showed you the year's supply of dog food behind the door you picked (instead of one of the others), and you decided not to switch.

  2. you can't expect restaurant staff to eat the same food everyday! They should be allowed the luxury of Chinese take-out :)

    Plus, I think that in many restaurants in the US, the staff get free drinks (soda) but not free food.. I don't think that's the situation in most other places in the world

  3. I'm pretty sure that this is actually quite/very common in restaurants — the staff gets sick of eating their own food every day. I think most places put more effort into concealing it though, so maybe their incompetence in that regard can still be correlated with the low quality of food that you experienced. Or maybe your subjective perception of the food was influenced by your witnessing of the third-party delivery. The truth has been lost to science forever. Or until you send blind-selected people to go eat there and report their experiences. of course you'd probably have to cross-compare their tastes at other restaurants with your own at the same restaurants… if we are ever going to know the truth about this chicken place you better start applying for grants now.

    @manuelg– ha!

  4. John: This may all be true, but . . . I strongly doubt that the people who work in that particular Chinese restaurant are ever ordering chicken from this particular place.
