No way. I think they're gonna get to version 0.999999999 before they even think about moving forward. It's like those Year 2K issues: How close can they get to 1 before roundoff error kicks in?
Seriously, we're working on a regularized version of lmer with a prior distribution on the variance parameters. This should help in sparse settings.
