A reference for multiple regression

In your blog entry, there is reference to a public document called “Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence.” I downloaded it and tried to read the chapter on multiple regression by Rubinfeld. I couldn’t read it because the footnotes were so copious and interfering. I removed them with awk and reformatted the chapter to resemble an ordinary (!) monograph. Some people will benefit from it, I think. It’s attached in MS Word format.

Here it is. I don’t agree with everything in it, but it’s basically reasonable.

  1. I had suggested that document mainly because the original query came from a lawyer, and I figure if judges actually use it as a reference he should have a look. The footnotes contain information that might be useful to judges and lawyers looking for precedent, and just take up space as far as anyone else is concerned. If you're just looking for general info on regression, the appendix to the Rubinfeld chapter is not bad, but you can find that info virtually anywhere. More generally, I agree that the Kennedy book is a pretty good plain-English guide (that's what I use). I'll definitely take a look at Gelman/Hill when that comes out.
